MELASMA SUPPORT

Heat and melasma

Practical guidance on sunlight, visible light, heat, flushing and everyday melasma protection.

View Guide Close Guide

Heat-aware melasma care

Melasma is influenced by several factors, including ultraviolet and visible light, hormones, genetics and inflammation. Some people also report flares with heat or facial flushing, but individual triggers vary.

  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 50 daily and reapply according to the product label, especially outdoors.
  • For visible-light protection, consider a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides.
  • Use shade, a wide-brimmed hat and avoid prolonged exposure during peak UV periods.
  • If heat seems to trigger your pigmentation, reduce direct hot air, steam and prolonged overheating where practical.
  • Choose gentle cooling for comfort. Cooling is not a replacement for sunscreen or medical treatment.
  • Introduce pigment-focused products gradually and follow their individual directions.
Important: Phones and laptops produce much less visible-light exposure than sunlight. Do not rely on antioxidant supplements or skincare alone to prevent melasma.

Vitamin D3 and K2: safer practical guidance

Vitamin D supports bone and muscle health, but D3 and K2 are not established treatments for melasma. A fixed D3-to-K2 ratio is not an official medical requirement.

  • For UK adults, the general public-health recommendation is commonly 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D daily, particularly during autumn and winter.
  • Do not routinely exceed 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) of vitamin D daily unless a qualified clinician has advised and monitored a different dose.
  • Confirmed deficiency should be treated according to blood results and clinician guidance rather than a skin-focused dosage.
  • Vitamin D can be taken with a meal. Consistency matters more than an unproven morning-only rule.
  • Do not start vitamin K supplements without professional advice if you take warfarin or another vitamin-K antagonist.
  • Ask a pharmacist or clinician before supplementing if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney disease, kidney stones, high calcium, sarcoidosis or take prescription medicines.
Medical note: Supplement needs and blood-test targets vary. This guide is educational and does not replace individual medical advice.

Build a clear morning and evening rhythm

Your exact routine depends on your products, but a simple order helps keep things easy to follow.

MorningCleanse → Treat → Moisturise → SPF
EveningCleanse → Treat → Hydrate / Repair
  • Apply products according to their individual instructions.
  • Allow each step to settle comfortably before moving to the next.
  • Use appropriate daytime sun protection as the final morning step.

PRODUCT USE

Introducing New Products

Learn how to add unfamiliar products gradually so your routine stays easy to understand.

View Guide Close Guide

Change one thing at a time

Introducing several unfamiliar products together can make it difficult to understand which product your skin is responding to.

  • Introduce one new topical product at a time where practical.
  • Follow the recommended frequency rather than using more in an attempt to speed up results.
  • If your skin becomes significantly uncomfortable, stop the new product and seek appropriate advice.
  • Keep the rest of your routine simple while you assess the new addition.
PDF will be available soon.
INGREDIENTS

Active Ingredients Guide

Understand a more considered approach to active skincare, frequency and product combinations.

Use active skincare thoughtfully

Active ingredients can have different instructions, frequencies and compatibility considerations, so product-specific directions should always come first.

  • Avoid assuming that more products or more frequent use will produce better results.
  • Introduce unfamiliar active products gradually where appropriate.
  • Be especially careful when combining multiple exfoliating or treatment-focused products.
  • Use appropriate sun protection during the day.

SAFETY

Patch Testing Guide

A clear, cautious introduction to patch testing a new topical product before wider use.

View Guide Close Guide

A careful first step with a new topical product

Patch testing can help you observe how a small area of skin responds before wider use. Always follow any patch-test instructions supplied with the product.

  1. Choose a small, discreet area of healthy skin.
  2. Apply a small amount as directed for that product.
  3. Observe the area before using the product more widely.
  4. Do not continue if you experience a significant or persistent reaction.

Patch testing cannot guarantee that irritation or allergy will never occur during later use.

LAYERING

Product Layering Guide

A simple layering framework that keeps product order organised without overcomplicating your routine.

View Guide Close Guide

Keep product order simple

Layering should support the way each product is intended to be used. When product directions specify an order, follow those directions first.

  • Start with cleansing.
  • Apply targeted treatment products according to their instructions.
  • Follow with moisturising or supportive products where appropriate.
  • Finish the morning routine with suitable sun protection.
Remember: Not every product needs to be layered into the same routine.
