Luminous Renewal Complex Cream
Formulated For
This product is suitable for skin presenting with:
Melasma. Symmetrical patches of deeper pigment, typically across the cheeks, forehead and upper lip, driven by hormonal, vascular and inflammatory input alongside UV exposure.
Hyperpigmentation and uneven tone. Generalised darkening or patchiness where pigment production and transfer to the surface layers have become dysregulated.
Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The marks left behind after acne, injury or irritation, where the inflammatory event itself has triggered local pigment production. Commonly called acne marks.
Solar lentigines and photoageing pigment. Discrete darker spots and diffuse loss of clarity following cumulative sun exposure. Commonly called sun spots or age spots.
Dull or slow turnover skin. Where surface shedding has slowed and pigment is retained in the upper layers for longer than it should be.
Formulated for use across all Fitzpatrick phototypes, the classification scale from I to VI describing how skin responds to UV exposure. There is no acid or retinoid load in this formula, which matters in deeper phototypes where irritation is itself a reliable trigger for further pigmentation.
Daily photoprotection is not optional with this product. Use the Advanced Protective Sun Lotion and the Luminous Glass Skin Tinted SPF from the range diligently, every day, including indoors and in winter. The tint is not cosmetic. The iron oxides that give it colour are what block visible light, and visible light drives pigment production in deeper phototypes through a pathway that a clear sunscreen leaves entirely open. Every active in this cream works by slowing an enzyme or interrupting a signal. None of them can outpace daily unprotected exposure, because UV re triggers the same pathway faster than any inhibitor closes it.
Not suitable for under 18s. Contains 4-Butylresorcinol.
Formulation Architecture
Melasma is not a surface problem. Pigment presenting at the skin’s surface is the endpoint of a chain that begins with inflammatory signalling, vascular activity, oxidative load and hormonal input, long before a melanocyte ever produces a pigment granule. A formulation that acts at one point in that chain acts on one link. This one is built to act at several.
The actives below are grouped by where they intervene, not by how impressive they sound.
The Delivery System
ComplexRenew Proprietary Bio Fermentation Base
Botanical extracts in their raw state carry most of their active constituents bound to sugar molecules, as glycosides. In that bound form the molecules are larger, more water loving, and poorly matched to the lipid environment of the stratum corneum.
Controlled microbial fermentation uses enzymes produced by the culture to cleave those sugar bonds, releasing the free active form known as the aglycone. The result is a lower molecular weight, more lipid compatible fraction with a different constituent profile to the unfermented extract. Fermentation also generates secondary metabolites such as organic acids, amino acids and peptides that are absent from a conventional extract.
The base is paired with a graded solvent system (butylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, ethoxydiglycol) selected to hold poorly water soluble actives such as 4-Butylresorcinol in true solution rather than suspension. An active that has fallen out of solution is not an active.
Pigment Pathway Actives
Each of these interrupts melanogenesis, the pigment production cascade, at a different stage. They are not interchangeable.
Tranexamic Acid
Acts upstream of the melanocyte. Tranexamic acid is a lysine analogue that occupies the lysine binding sites on plasminogen, limiting its conversion to plasmin. Plasmin activity in keratinocytes drives arachidonic acid release and downstream prostaglandin signalling, one of the routes by which UV exposure and inflammation stimulate pigment producing cells. The same pathway is implicated in the vascular and mast cell component that characterises melasma specifically, which is why tranexamic acid behaves differently to a conventional tyrosinase inhibitor.
Alpha-Arbutin
A competitive inhibitor at the tyrosinase active site. Tyrosinase is the rate limiting, copper dependent enzyme that converts tyrosine into the precursors of melanin. Alpha-Arbutin occupies the site without being converted itself, slowing the reaction rate. It is formulated within a controlled pH window to maintain the intact glycoside and avoid hydrolysis of the molecule during shelf life.
4-Butylresorcinol
A resorcinol scaffold inhibitor with high affinity for the binuclear copper centre of tyrosinase, and additional activity at TRP-1, a downstream enzyme in the same cascade. Two points of interruption in one pathway rather than one. Restricted to adult use, see warnings.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Does not act on tyrosinase at all. Niacinamide interferes with the transfer of finished melanosomes, the pigment carrying organelles, from the melanocyte to the surrounding keratinocytes, a step mediated in part by PAR-2 receptor signalling. Pigment that is produced but not transferred does not reach the visible layers. As a precursor to NAD+ and NADPH it also supports the enzymatic machinery of ceramide and fatty acid synthesis in the barrier.
Acetyl Glucosamine
An amino sugar with two roles. It acts on the maturation of tyrosinase itself. The enzyme requires correct glycosylation, meaning the attachment of sugar chains during its assembly, in order to become fully functional, and acetyl glucosamine interferes with that step. Separately it serves as a substrate in hyaluronic acid synthesis.
Inositol
Inositol does not bind hormone receptors directly. It sits one step downstream, as the structural backbone of the phosphoinositide second messenger system: the relay that carries a signal from a receptor at the cell surface into the interior of the cell.
Inositol is incorporated into phosphatidylinositol within the cell membrane, which is cleaved on receptor activation into IP3 and diacylglycerol, the two molecules that release intracellular calcium and activate protein kinase C.
This is directly relevant to pigmentation. Endothelin 1, one of the principal melanogenic signals released by keratinocytes after UV exposure and specifically implicated in melasma, acts through exactly this route. Its receptor on the melanocyte is coupled to phospholipase C, and the protein kinase C activity generated downstream is one of the recognised mechanisms by which tyrosinase is switched on. Inositol is also the substrate for the inositol phosphoglycan messengers used in insulin signalling, the pathway that connects insulin resistance and androgen activity to pigmentary and inflammatory skin patterns.
Included here as a signalling substrate and osmolyte.
Papain
A cysteine protease from Carica papaya that hydrolyses the peptide bonds of corneodesmosomes, the protein rivets holding dead corneocytes together at the surface. Enzymatic desquamation proceeds without acid load or mechanical disruption, which matters in pigmented and reactive skin where inflammation is itself a pigment trigger.
Oxidative and Mitochondrial Support
Reactive oxygen species are not a background concern in pigmentary disorder. Oxidative stress activates the same signalling pathways that upregulate melanogenesis, and tyrosinase catalysis itself generates them.
Glutathione
The body’s principal intracellular thiol antioxidant. Within the melanogenesis pathway it acts at the branch point that determines pigment type, favouring the lighter pheomelanin route over eumelanin, and its thiol group chelates copper, the cofactor tyrosinase depends on.
Ergothioneine
A sulphur containing amino acid derivative that human cells cannot synthesise but actively import via a dedicated transporter (OCTN1), which concentrates it in tissues under high oxidative load, including mitochondria. It is stable across a wide pH range and does not readily auto oxidise, unlike most antioxidants.
Dimethylmethoxy Chromanol
A synthetic chromanol structurally related to the vitamin E core, engineered to quench three species rather than one: reactive oxygen, reactive nitrogen and reactive carbonyl species. Reactive carbonyls are the intermediates in glycation, the process by which sugars cross link structural proteins.
Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
A chain breaking antioxidant that sits within the lipid phase, donating a hydrogen atom to terminate lipid peroxidation chain reactions in the membrane and in the formula itself.
Botanical Architecture
The botanical selection is not decorative and it is not arbitrary. These are constituents drawn largely from the Traditional Chinese Medicine materia medica, chosen for documented phytochemistry that maps onto the same pathways as the synthetic actives above: inflammatory signalling, oxidative load, and enzyme inhibition.
Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract
Its principal lipophilic constituent, glabridin, is a documented tyrosinase inhibitor and also acts on inflammatory mediator release, addressing both the enzyme and one of its upstream triggers.
Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate
The water soluble potassium salt of glycyrrhizic acid, from the same plant. Works on the inflammatory arm, modulating phospholipase A2 activity and cortisol metabolism at the tissue level.
Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract (Huang Qin)
Supplies baicalin and baicalein, flavone glycosides that fermentation converts to their more bioavailable aglycone forms. Documented free radical scavenging and inhibition of inflammatory signalling cascades.
Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract (Ku Shen)
Contains prenylated flavonoids including kurarinone, and the alkaloid matrine. The flavonoid fraction shows direct tyrosinase inhibitory activity in vitro.
Ledebouriella Divaricata Root Extract (Fang Feng, Saposhnikovia)
A chromone rich root supplying prim-O-glucosylcimifugin and 4’-O-β-D-glucosyl-5-O-methylvisamminol. Used in TCM to address wind heat patterns. Its chromone constituents are studied for anti inflammatory activity.
Eclipta Prostrata Extract (Han Lian Cao)
Source of wedelolactone, a coumestan with documented antioxidant and enzyme modulating activity. In TCM it is a kidney and liver yin tonic, the organ systems classically implicated in chronic facial pigmentation.
Magnolia Sieboldii Extract
Supplies the neolignans magnolol and honokiol, studied for antioxidant and anti inflammatory activity.
Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract
Faradiol triterpenoid esters, the constituents responsible for its documented skin conditioning and soothing activity.
Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Bran Extract
A source of ferulic acid and related phenolic compounds. Ferulic acid is a phenolic antioxidant that also improves the photostability of other antioxidants held in the same formula.
Barrier and Hydration
Pigment correction without barrier support is self defeating. A compromised barrier is an inflamed barrier, and inflammation feeds melanogenesis.
Squalane
A fully saturated hydrocarbon emollient. Human sebum contains squalene, which oxidises readily. Hydrogenating it to squalane removes the double bonds, giving a lipid with the same skin affinity and none of the oxidative instability.
Sodium Hyaluronate
The sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, a glycosaminoglycan that binds water within its molecular structure and holds it in the upper layers.
Glycerin, Butylene Glycol
Humectants that draw and hold water in the stratum corneum and act as carriers for water soluble actives.
Arginine
An amino acid component of the skin’s own natural moisturising factor, which additionally contributes to pH adjustment of the finished formula. Inositol serves a parallel osmolyte role alongside its signalling function described above.
Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Glucoside
Fatty alcohol and emulsifiers forming the lamellar structure of the cream, the layered arrangement that determines both the texture and the rate at which the lipid phase deposits on the skin.
Formulation Integrity
Hydroxyethylpiperazine Ethane Sulfonic Acid (HEPES)
A buffering agent holding the formula within the narrow pH window where niacinamide remains stable, Alpha-Arbutin resists hydrolysis, and enzymatic activity is preserved. In a multi active formula, pH is not a detail. It determines whether each active survives the shelf.
Hydroxyacetophenone, 1,2-Hexanediol
Multifunctional ingredients providing antimicrobial protection and antioxidant support to the formula, allowing a reduced conventional preservative load.
Xanthan Gum, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer
The rheology system. Suspension stability is what keeps solid phase actives evenly distributed through the product rather than settling, so the dose in the last application matches the first.
